Irish Village, East Durham New York

This Donegal Cottage is the first cottage from Donegal and Ireland that was taken down in Ireland exported to another country and erected exactly the same way it was in Donegal.

The Donegal Cottage adds a very significant piece history to the cultural centre and its mission of preserving Irish history. Not only is the structure of the cottage exactly as you would find it in Donegal. The interior of the cottage is furnished with the exact artifacts that would have been found in the cottage in the 1900’s. This lets us learn a great deal of how the Irish people lived back then.

The cottage is a great history lesson for anybody wanting to learn more about life in Ireland in the 1900’s. If you visit the cottage at certain times throughout the year when some of the festivals are on you can see exactly how the people of Ireland dressed and acted back then. The Catskill Irish Rep Theatre puts on performances of life in Ireland using the cottage as a stage. Watch the events calendar for details of these performances.
